Usyk eyes undisputed heavyweight crown after Fury victory

Oleksandr Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassyuk says he would like to see him straight for the undisputed championship following his 12-round unanimous decision victory over Tyson Fury in their rematch last Saturday night.

They will have to wait for the winner of the February 22 match between IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois and Joseph Parker before they can begin negotiations for an undisputed championship match with Usyk (23-0, 12 KOs).

Usyk says he’s open to any fight, and it’ll be up to Turki Alalshikh if he wants him to fight the Dubois-Parker winner. Oleksandr has no one else to fight against, and this would be a huge challenge for him at heavyweight. He’s talked about wanting to move up to cruiserweight, but he won’t do it if he can get a more financial fight against Dubois or Parker.

Usyk’s dominance

“It was a great performance. In fact, I’m at a loss for (words) for this reason. I don’t have much to say. He was an encyclopedia of boxing,” promoter Alex Krassyuk told iFL TVspeaking about his fighter Oleksandr Usyk after his victory over Tyson Fury last Saturday night in Riyadh.

“In 12 rounds, he showed how boxing is done. So he did it from the basement. He was putting the bricks. Put in the windows and the roof, and he will have created the building,” Krassyuk said of Usyk’s performance.

“We have been fighting in the camp of our opponents since 2016. This is not new for us. It’s a comfortable atmosphere. We got used to it.

“He will probably relax, recover his mind and come back to training,” Krassyuk said when asked what Fury should do next. “He’s a great champion. This is not what I would like to see. This is what the boxing world would like to see. If they’re happy to see this fight, that’s great.

Fury is NOT going to retire because he wants to fight Anthony Joshua, and you can understand that. There’s plenty of money for him to face AJ, and it would help him redeem himself after losing back-to-back fights to Usyk.

“For me, I would love to see Usyk undisputed #3,” Krassyuk said, noting that he wants to see Usyk face the winner of the Feb. 22 contest between IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois and Joseph Parker.

Turki Alalashikh also wants the undisputed fight between Usyk and the Dubois vs. Parker winner, so there’s no problem making that fight happen as long as something unforeseen happens. Anthony Joshua won’t be a problem as he has shown no desire to fight Dubois and knows better than to face Usyk a third time.

Fury beard controversy

“It’s not an issue that affects the outcome of the fight,” Krassyuk said when asked if Fury’s beard was a problem for them in this fight. “It’s just a formal question of whether we follow the rules or not. The rules say that the beard must be trimmed so that its volume does not affect the punch.

“All organizations have this, but it does not specify the specific length of the beard, and for this reason you cannot know the line between law and illegality,” Krassyuk said.

It’s impossible to know whether Fury’s beard cushioned the impact of Usyk’s punches enough for him to avoid injury or not. On several occasions, Fury’s head lolled back and his eyes turned white when he was hit hard by Usyk. It’s unclear whether these shots would have done more damage if Fury had been clean-shaven. You always would have liked to see Fury shave.

What will be interesting to see is if Fury chooses to shave without a fight. If he does, we must believe that he grew his beard to use it as a fortification to protect him from blows.
